Some candy shops sell candy. Buffett's Candies makes it. On Academy Road NE in northeast Albuquerque, this locally owned confectionery has been turning out handcrafted chocolates and sweets long enough that grandmothers now bring their grandchildren, repeating a ritual that started over two decades ago. That kind of loyalty is not accidental.

Step inside and you get a bright, clean shop where the smell of real chocolate hits you before you reach the counter. The staff are genuinely friendly, not scripted-friendly, and they know what they're talking about. Everything on display was made on site, from rich chocolate truffles to the shop's famous scorpion candies packed with cashews, chocolate, and caramel. You'll also find sugar-free options for those who want a treat without the compromise.

This is a New Mexico original, not a franchise, not a chain. With a 4.8-star rating across more than 100 reviews, Buffett's has earned its reputation one piece of candy at a time. If you're looking for a gift, a special treat, or just something worth the splurge, this is the stop on Academy Road you won't regret.

"My grandma always bought us treats here - over 20 years ago. Today, I visited this store and bought some treats for my grandson. Also picked up some scorpions (cashew, chocolate and caramel), and Gila Monster (pecans, caramel and chocolate), cherry sours, caramels, and two kinds of chocolate hearts! I was greeted by Al with a sample of their delicious pistachio brittle. This is a happy, fun candy factory to visit. Quality goods! So delicious!"

"Excellent old fashioned candy shop with a long history in ABQ where it originated. This place is really fun and the candy and chocolate is great. It's a little pricey but I saw someone compare the chocolate quality to the grocery store and that's just not been my experience at all. This place has seasonal chocolates and treats as well as year stuff and it's fun to check out. Employees have always been very friendly and helpful. There are several nice gift items and everything is packaged really nicely. There are now two locations and this is the newest one. This one feels bigger and has windows that you can look through to see the candy having process. Seeing the employees in their hats and uniforms working back brings me nostalgia for a time I never experienced. Worth a visit in my experience!"

"A bright, clean, and cozy place. Candies are made on site. The service is super friendly. They also provide sugar-free candies though not many. This is a New Mexico local business. I bought their chocolate bars in the first tour. They tasted great. I recommend people to stop by if interested."

"I was struggling between 3 and 4 stars. Can't give it a 5 due to price and taste . My daughter and I went in for the 1st time and yes it's a really nice place with friendly staff. You got to look through the windows of where they make the chocolates and wrap them and stuff. The displays were nicely set up. They came around with a free sample that I can't remember the name of but it had chocolate and caramel. I thought it was OK. My daughter picked out the $8.95 bag of peach rings and when we got home for her to try them she said they were more stiffer and tasted different. She said the dollar store ones tasted better. I tried 1 but I'm not a peach ring fan. I thought it was a bit stiff. As far as flavor I still don't know what to think."

"Chocoholics beware! Just looking at all of the delectable, mouthwatering chocolates gave me a sugar high. This is a very relaxed store, with windows into each kitchen so you can see the employees creating chocolate delicacies. As we were looking at the eggs and bunnies, we saw the praying hands & Last Supper. The white chocolate Last Supper was more impressive than the milk chocolate one as you can see all the details in the white. Al, one of the employees, told us that the Last Supper is one of the more difficult to create. It does come out of a mold, but needs expert hands to cut away the extra chocolate that clings to the small details. Our niece bought the last one! Al also showed us the framed newspaper clippings about the store and its founders. He pointed out how the third generation is now running the store, and that some of their customers are also third generation. We bought some of the eggs, caramels, and white & milk chocolate butterflies. We are bringing them home and enjoying each and every one. We will be back!!"
